Can someone recommend a good Mac system for working with Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3? (more info below)?

I have started college after being out of high school since 1992. I’m pursuing a degree in graphics and multimedia, and I am going to be working with Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3.

Now, I am a wedding photographer, and I am no stranger to Photoshop and Illustrator. I’ve been using them on my PC for years. I’ve been told that MacIntosh is the industry standard for Graphics, however….and that I ought to consider switching from PC to MacIntosh when it comes to my photo and graphic software.

Well, Mac is a bit pricey compared to PC. I’m definitely going to try to find a good deal on a used system. What do I need to look for though? Macs are all over Ebay, but just like PC’s, there are a million different models. IMacs, PowerMacs, IBooks, MiniMacs, some are G3, some are G4, some are G5….blah blah…

What do I need to steer away from based on my needs? What’s totally obsolete, and what is still usable and upgradeable?

Were there Macs that were “lemons”?

Help!!

You don’t need to switch just to use the same software packages on a different system. Adobe goes to great lengths to make Photoshop, Illustrator and the rest of the Creative Suite apps work as identically as possible between the two systems. If you’re really trying to save the money, then don’t switch.

Most of the ‘Macs are better for graphics work’ assertions are personal preferences. There may be productivity differences that matter in certain circumstances but there isn’t anything you can do with either type of system that the other cannot do.

So, if you are really planning to switch to a Mac and use it as a platform to make your living off of, my advice would be to purchase the newest/fastest Mac with as much memory as you can afford, since processing time means money; a slower Mac will just slow you down, and a newer Mac may still be under warranty.

There were Mac lemons. All of those are too slow to run CS3 apps. Some more recent Macs may be deemed lemons too, but that I know of, those are due to issues with some of the laptop models.

Be aware that for older Mac models, it may not be possible to run the latest, or even recent versions of Mac OS X. I don’t know the requirements for CS3, but I would expect it to require Tiger or Leopard (OS X.4 & OS X.5 respectively).

Certainly avoid the PowerMacs, G3′s, G4′s, G5′s, Mac Minis. These are either too old, underpowered, or cannot have sufficient memory to be really useful for heavy duty graphics work. Any of the Intel-based Macs should serve you well.
